Deep sea composers
The core of this project was to design a T-shirt print with three classical music inspired characters: Dvorshark (a shark based on Antonin Dvorak), Sibwhaleius (a whale based on Jean Sibelius), Shostakofish (a fish based on Dmitri Shostakovich). Each personage should have looked the fish-version of himself.
The idea and the process
One my client brought me the funniest idea ever - to design a sea-composer T-shirt for him. He picked three classical composers, whose names could be easily adjusted to fish-names (like Dvorak is turned into Dvorshark) and wanted to have the correspondent personages designed.
This is a very interesting things to do - previously I've already created famous people caricatures (like Frank Zappa or Woody Allen), but it's twice as cool to take it to the next level and turn real people figures into funny fish characters.
First I thought of the depicting the main characteristics of each composer's music in their fish-figures, but it happened to be rather complicated task for these caricatures - all of them are famous for their orchestral work, so I cannot even place any notable musical instrument on the illustration.
Then we decided to go with the colours - to base each personage's colour scheme on the flag of the country, they've lived and worked in - Czech Republic, Finland and Soviet Union. Also I've tried to make the shape of the bodies resembling the actual composer type.
The result is funny and catchable - who knows how the original person looked like, will recognize him from the first glance.
